The title of my devotional reading this morning was “Overcoming Giants.” The corresponding Bible reading was 1 Samuel 17:31–52. I encourage you to read it. It’s the story and David and Goliath, and “teaches believers that obstacles in our life are no match for God.
“Whether our Goliath is a relational challenge or an overwhelming situation, we must realize that the Lord is sovereign over everything in heaven and on earth, and He has the power to give us the victory” (Charles Stanley, In Touch, May 7, 2018).
We all have giants in our lives.
As relates to writing, the giant you may be facing is getting published, or if you are already published, how to increase sales of your book.
As an entrepreneur, my giant is paying the bills each month, aka how to bring in more clients.
God desires for us to walk this journey of life with Him, but He allows us to make that choice. You may have accepted Jesus as your Savior, but that doesn’t mean you seek Him for guidance in every aspect of your life. As it states in Proverbs 3:5–6, He wants us to seek His guidance in all things. He has a good plan for us, better than any we could devise (Jeremiah 29:11).
If God has called you to write, then daily seek His direction. Ask Him for the finances needed to hire a professional editor or cover designer or formatter or all of the above. And after you pray, trust Him and believe you have received (Mark 11:24).
Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit each time you sit down to work on your book or short story or devotional or magazine article because…
There is more than one way to reach the world with what we write.
To encourage yourself, find Bible verses that speak to your heart concerning your situation. Here are a few that speak to me that I’ve personalized:
- I am His masterpiece. He created me anew in Christ Jesus, so I can do the good things He planned for me long ago. (Ephesians 2:10)
- God is working in me, giving me the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. (Philippians 2:13)
- God gives me the power to be successful, so He can confirm His covenant. (Deuteronomy 8:18)
- “The LORD does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD’S.” God will deliver me. (1 Samuel 17:47)
One of my favorites is 2 Corinthians 9:10 NLT…
For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.
If you are struggling with giants today, let these verses encourage you. Take some time today (preferably every day) to seek God. Ask for His encouragement and direction. He will bring it.

Debra, thank you for the encouragement! My life verse is Romans 5:8. – “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Debra says
Steve, that’s a terrific verse. God’s love is unfathomable. That He died while we were still sinners! My brain can’t comprehend that so I simply accept it and revel in it.
