I’ve been reading a wonderful book written by Lynn Austin titled Hidden Places.
More than once as I’ve read the gentle, lilting prose of this story I’ve said to myself “I wish I could write like this.”
I bet you’ve found yourself saying the same thing as you’ve read books that gripped you with the power of those well written words.
But this morning the very moment after I thought those words, God answered back.
“I want you to write like you, the person I created you to be.”
All too often we compare ourselves to those around us. We’re not as pretty, skinny, smart, lively, educated, or as skillful.
As writers we compare our words to other writers and say “I wish I could write like that” or worse “I’ll never write like that.”
You’re right. You won’t. Because God created you unique from all others. He doesn’t want you to write like Jerry Jenkins or Max Lucado or whomever your favorite author might be.
He wants you to write like you. From your unique personality and life experiences.
Too many writers say “I’ll never write like that.” The words echo in their heads and they’re afraid to even try.
Put an end to I wish and I’ll never. Instead determine that you are going to write like you and no one else. Ask God to help you find your unique voice as you write, and write the words only you can.
Have you caught yourself saying these things? How has it affected your motivation to write?

I occasionally have a thought run through my head that says, ‘You really should write more spiritually.’ I toss that around for a while and then God graciously sends someone to tell me, “I love reading your ‘stuff.’ I can relate so well to what you say.” Then I know God wants me to write the way he created me to because I am reaching some who would not read something deeply spiritual. I hope that makes sense. 🙂

Yes, that makes sense. No matter what self-talk we hear, it can impact our writing, for good or bad. By being true to who God created you to be you are reaching others for Him. I can hear God saying “Have you seen My servant Gloria? There is none like her on all the earth.” 🙂
