The Bible says in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The words we speak have power to create life or death in our lives or the lives of others. If you doubt that, remember how God created all that He created: He spoke it.
Now combine that with “faith comes by hearing” (Romans 10:17), and you gain a better understanding of how affirmations work and why what we say to ourselves is so important.
Signature Self-Talk
And to that end, I’d like to tell you about the book Signature Self-Talk: Master the Art of Influencing Yourself by Melissa Holy.
Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical about the idea of self-talk, but Melissa’s compelling sales copy convinced me. Quite frankly, I was stuck in certain aspects of my career. I wanted change, and I knew enough to realize false beliefs were an obstacle.
I gobbled this book up and started applying it. First, I created written statements I read out loud each day. Then I recorded them so I could listen to them anytime and often did before I started work, when I went on a walk, or when I went to bed. These recordings claimed the truth of God’s Word about me and for me and helped me replace lies with God’s truth.
Additionally, I became much more aware of the words I say. I try not to say things like “technology intimidates me” or “I hate marketing,” and instead either say nothing or say the opposite.
Now when I want to make change in my life, rewire false beliefs, or reach new goals, I create a signature self-talk to get me started and to encourage and motivate me along the way.
My Review of the Book on Amazon
“Reading this book was like having the author in my head reading my thoughts. This book is a quick read; however, I was a bit skeptical about whether the strategies would work. I recorded my first self-talk recordings on May 25 [2023] and have been listening to them nearly every day. I sensed a difference in myself within days. I’ve recorded more since then and am seeing even greater results. So glad I purchased this book!”
What are you regularly telling yourself that’s keeping you stuck?
You might be quoting “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13 NKJV), but you are undoing those words every time you say “I’m not very good at ______” (you fill in the blank).
I’m guilty of this, too, but I put 2 Cor. 10:5b into action on a daily basis “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” When I catch myself entertaining negative thoughts, I immediately say “stop!” either to myself or out loud. And those thoughts cease.
I’m getting way better at watching my words and saying only those things I want in my life rather than what I don’t want.
Thank you, Melissa, for writing this book!
A brief shout of happy birthday to my dad. He went to be with the Lord in 2010, but all the same, he’s celebrating his 100th birthday today. Happy 100th, Dad.
